Beaver Meadows

Was supposed to boulder with Nick, India, Jonah and Roberto at Emerald Lake but there were still blizzard-like conditions in the area. So we headed to lower elevations and climbed near Beaver Meadows. Much nicer weather and the Fall foliage was in full effect. The aspens glow a tremendous gold under the sun's rays.

Chaos Canyon

Met up with Nick and India in Rocky Mountain National Park. They just finished modding out their minivan and are currently 3 weeks into their cross-country climbing road trip. We hiked up to Chaos Canyon for some alpine bouldering.

View of Bear Lake and the mountains behind it.

View down Chaos Canyon.

In the morning, Chaos Canyon was sunny and hot. By mid-afternoon we were enveloped in clouds and snow was flying around in 30 mph winds. They call it Chaos Canyon for a reason...

Eldo Fo Sho

Sam, her friend Jason and I headed to Eldorado Canyon for a day of trad climbing. Sam and I started by climbing the Bastille Crack [5.8], which happened to be my first multi-pitch trad lead last time I was here with Jacquie.

We then headed up to the Rincon Wall. Here's Jason bravely leading the very stout and sandbagged Rincon [5.9+]. It rained a little bit, but our parade was not spoiled.

The sun came out just before ducking behind the mountains. A fine day indeed.

Crooked Stave and North Table

Let's see what else Denver has to offer. With some recently hot days, a sour beer or two would quench the thirst perfectly. Crooked Stave delivered! A huge menu of sours available, many of them aged in oak barrels, and all of them were delicious. 5/5 would recommend.

Had some time to kill before meeting up with Sam and Nate so I checked out North Table Mountain. A nice expanse of decent climbing right within Golden, CO. Within 10 minutes of being there I was able to score 2 quickdraws that were left on fairly easy routes. Found some fun cracks and slabs to scramble around on. Unfortunately, the Coors factory is right below the mountain and with the right breeze a gnarly smell of boiling mash would envelope the entire area. The aroma of a terrible beer being born could be smelled for miles! Way to ruin that Rocky Mountain fresh water...

Pool Party!

Yep, still hanging around the Denver area. While all y'all back east are getting excited about sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes, I'm kickin it by the pool, getting my tan on.

After the pool party, we ventured to downtown Denver to watch our friend spin some tunes at a cool rooftop Bar. The music and the view were enjoyed by all.

Clear Creek Canyon

Joined Nate and Sam for a day of climbing in Clear Creek. Super cool climbing in a beautiful canyon! We then feasted at a BBQ and bonfire at Katie's place.  Having a hard time justifying why I don't just move to Colorado (looking at you, friends and fam).

The Harvest Is Coming

Found a nice place to camp just over the border of Colorado. While getting some food together for dinner, this big rock came out of nowhere!

Moab

Finally left Vegas and sailed over to Moab, Utah. What a beautiful town! It's surrounded on all sides by massive, colorful sandstone cliffs. An incredibly popular place to live for climbers and mountain bikers alike.

I joined Eve (She was a member of my camp at Burning Man) and some other cool peeps to climb around in Kane Creek Canyon. Super fun sandstone trad and sport routes. I definitely wouldn't mind spending way more time here.

After a full day of climbing, we headed farther into the canyon for the Moab Grassroots Music Exchange. It's a wonderful summer festival that's hosted on someone's private land deep within the canyon. Local and traveling musicians play and everyone dances their pants off all night. It was such a wonderful experience and I met so many awesomely interesting people.

There were dogs running around all night having a blast. This one here spent hours on the stage watching the crowd. Couldn't figure out if he was a bouncer or part of the band. Either way he was cool in my book.

I absolutely loved that the stage was built to accommodate listeners who wanted to climb around and watch the show from a different perspective. Very Burning Man-esque, with significantly less deep house music.

Moab is such an eclectic group of people from all walks of life hanging out harmoniously in the Utah desert. A truly splendid town that has my future attention for sure. If only I wasn't so committed to having a constantly changing environment, maybe then I could actually spend a decent amount of time in one place.

Running on an hour of sleep right now, time to get another coffee!

Lazy In Las Vegas

Been real quiet on the blogosphere. I've been at my Uncle's decompressing from the burn. Eating lots of food and taking plenty of showers. The last few days I've been helping out at the shop again but instead of cleaning I've been painting. The manager has wanted to add black accents throughout the shop for a while now and she's paying me quite well to get it done for her.

On a related note, I'm up over $70 from playing video poker.

Heading to Colorado soon for cooler temps and hopefully some big rocks!

Happy Burn!

Soooooo.... Burning Man was a whirlwind experience. Some personal highlights:
  • The best hugs ever
  • Joining a camp full of wonderful people and hosting fun events
  • Beard spa
  • Scotch and cigar night
  • Life-sized hungry hungry hippos
  • Late night grilled cheese
  • Lavender massage
  • Yoga and meditation
  • Mini golf
  • Fruit tasting, bourbon tasting, craft beer tasting
  • Lots of booty spanking
  • Cattle prodder to the butt cheek for a shot
  • So many interactive art structures
  • Riding random art cars to random destinations
  • Exploring random camps and meeting tons of interesting people
  • Dancing pretty much all the time
  • 3 all-nighters to watch the sunrises (2 of them back-to-back)
  • Gifting things and receiving gifts
  • Getting lost during dust storms
  • Bawling my eyes out inside the temple
  • Watching the man and the temple burn
It was such a unique experience that I can only say that everyone should consider going at some point in their life. Here's a few more of my favorite photos in an effort to show you a fraction of what goes down throughout the week.

Several times we walked around the streets picking up trash and spraying "windex" into people's mouths (vodka and blue juice). Great way to explore the neighborhood and meet new people.

The playa featured some of the most impressive and beautiful art I've ever seen. One of my personal favorites was this massive whale constructed out of metal and stained glass. The lights inside played different effects and was complimented by peaceful whale noises.

Late night roller skating to 70's disco? Yep, they had it. Only took one spill after getting cocky.

Several times throughout the week we hosted a "Big Air Big Flair" event. The bike jump we brought was the cause of at least 50 faceplants into the dirt. After being reluctantly coerced by Sebastian and his megaphone, this girl below proceeded to hit the jump, faceplant and break her elbow. Her cast and sling must have provided a great story for the rest of the week.

Decent skatepark for those who want to shred.

Another beautiful art sculpture.

Our blind fruit tasting was a massive hit. Whodathunk fresh fruit could taste so good in a harsh desert environment?

Our craft beer tasting was also a huge hit. Our camp brewers did an awesome job brewing up 20 gallons for the event.

The big man on campus this year was definitely the Mayan Warrior car. At over $2 million ($1 mil for the sound system alone), it dominated the playa and drew the biggest crowds all week. Lots of fun dancing in front of this beast.

Bourbon bacon booty event. Bourbon tasting with a lecture on the history and styles of bourbon. Crisp bacon provided along with spankings during the post-lecture quiz. We cooked 30 pounds of bacon throughout the week.

Another big air contest with some generous judges.

Resident biker Corey made sure we kept the distance record in-house all week.

The man with a view of his intricate gear configuration in the back. The goal was for him to spin via humans turning a wheel at the base. Some issues were encountered and deemed unsafe for spinning. still fascinating engineering.

One of the larger DJ stages on the playa.

Sunrise set by Tycho. It was so cool finding the art car via word-of-mouth and following it way out to the boundary of the city with 500 others then dancing until the sun came up.

The gang at sunrise. It got cold that night!

One of the art installations that was burned. 3 gorgeous wooden orcas that appeared to be jumping out of the playa. Notice the smoke tornado coming from the fire. Very common event.

Shot of the massive crowd during our bourbon bacon booty event. Katie did an awesome job leading the event and spreading some bourbon knowledge.

Real life hungry hungry hippos. Super fun event!

Part of the crowd during burn night.

The firework show during the burn was better than most 4th of July shows I've seen.

Note to self: Don't stand downwind from the massive bonfire. Especially if you're wearing fur.

Insane amount of fire...

Eventually it burns down enough to the point where everyone rushes in to get closer.

3 MASSIVE lighthouses were also burned that night.

People actually brought marshmallows to roast over the embers. Not sure why I didn't...

Climbing around on the gears from the man. The lack of crowd control was slightly unsettling yet very refreshing.

Biagio and Grady braving the dust storm that blew through around 3 in the morning.

Good morning.

The temple burn the next night had a very different vibe. No music and lots of silent reflection.

Long story short, I hope this isn't my last burn!
